FishinVallarta.com - F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions)

We've put together a list of answers to the most frequently asked questions about fishing in Puerto Vallarta. If you have more questions, go to our page Contact us.

Contract All | Expand All

1 - What is included / not included with a charter?
Please refer to our CHARTERS & RATES for a complete list of what is / is not included in your charter.

2 - Do I need advanced reservations?
A deposit must be received to hold your reservation (see RESERVE NOW). Your reservation confirmation will be sent by email within 24 hours. The balance must be paid prior to boarding on the day of your departure. This amount may be paid in pesos or U.S. Dollars.

3 - What is your cancellation policy?
Any cancellations made with more than (30) days notice - deposits will be refunded in full, less a $25 administration fee. Cancellations made less than (30) days prior to departure are non-refundable. Any amount forfeited due to cancellation will be held "on account" for a period of one year. If you book another trip with us within this one-year period, this amount will be credited toward the price of your trip.

4 - What is your bad weather policy?
When the sea gets too rough, the port will close and no boats can go out. In the event this happens, we can reschedule your trip or give you a refund. If you want to apply your deposit toward alternate activities, (see Other Vallarta Activities) we can arrange that too. However, if the port is open, we will still go out - rain or shine.

5 - If I have a problem who do I address?
Please keep complaints to yourself (just kidding). The owner of fishinvallarta.com, Brian Symington, is always available to settle any grievances. (see SERVICE GUARANTEE)

6 - Do you have a catch and release program?
Yes, as members of the Billfish Foundation we encourage all anglers to practice conservation. Let the crew know that you want your fish released.

7 - Do you guarantee that I will catch fish?
Unlike some of the others that make this claim we can't guarantee that you'll catch a fish. However our catch rates are impressive: 70% of the time on 4 hour charters, 80% on 6 hour trips, and 95% of the time on 8 hour or all day excursions. It is rare for a fisherman to go home empty-handed. Just remember, if you always caught something it wouldn't be called fishing, it would be called catching.

8 - What trip should I take for the best fishing?
It will depend on a variety of factors
- How much time do you have?
- What is you budget? (see CHARTERS & RATES)
- What is in season? ( SEE WHAT'S BITING )
- What location you choose ( see WHERE THE FISH ARE )

9 - What can I do with the fish I catch?
Your catch will be cleaned and prepared for transport by the crew. Coolers and freezer packets are available to transport your catch home. Bringing fillet into the US is not a problem as long as it's well-frozen and in a leak-proof container. Should you desire, we can arrange to have your catch mounted through associates in Mexico City or Florida.

10 - Are your boats fully equipped?
All of our boats are fully equipped with top-of-the-line Penn and Shimano outfits with plenty of tackle to guarantee the best fishing possible. See ( CHARTERS & RATES ) for a complete list of equipment on each of our boats.

11 - What time do the boats leave / return?
Standard departure time is 7:00 am (pick up point is the LIGHTHOUSE). Earlier departures can be arranged. Return time(s) will depend on the length of your charter.

12 - Will there be other people on the boat with us?
All charters are per boat up to the maximum number of people allowed ( see CHARTERS & RATES). So the answer is - only you and your invited guests will be on the boat.

13 - Can I reserve a particular boat or skipper?
No problem. We have lots of return clients with favorite boats and skippers. Reserve early to avoid disappointment.

14 - Does the crew speak English?
Language has never been an issue. Captains and crews all have essential English skills and will provide you an opportunity to pick up a few choice Spanish phrases.

15 - How much should I tip the crew?
Generally 10-15%, subject to your satisfaction with the crew's performance.

16 - Can I fish with my own tackle?
Yes you may, or in combination with our supplied tackle.

17 - Can I bait and hook the fish myself?
The crew is there to assist you. Let them know what you would like to do.

18 - What documentation do I need to come to Mexico?
Under current conditions you will need a passport. You will be issued a tourist card upon entering the country. Be sure to hang on to it, you will need it to exit Mexico.

19 - I want to do more than just fish this vacation - can you help me?
Certainly!  We offer every tour in town for a discounted price (see Other Vallarta Activities ).  We'll even act as your concierge and give you information about the area, as well as the inside scoop on the town and activities here.
